Two IFAECI researchers receive Bunge y Born Foundation Awards

The winner of the 2024 Bunge y Born Foundation Prize in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences is Professor Alberto Piola, who is dedicated to Physical Oceanography and, in particular, to studying ocean currents and water masses, both regionally and globally.

The jury stated in its justification: “He is the most renowned physical oceanographer in Argentina and widely recognised worldwide. His leadership and commitment to strengthening marine sciences in Argentina, the network of collaborators in the region that he was able to create and grow over time, the recognition of the international scientific community and the fact that he has trained and continues to train disciples in oceanography in Argentina, which currently consolidate the critical mass of oceanographers in the country, are the best cards that make Professor Alberto Piola worthy of this award”.

Meanwhile, the winner of the 2024 Stimulus Award in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences is Juan Antonio Rivera, who has positioned himself as a reference in the study of climate variability and climate change and its regional impacts, particularly in the Central Andes region.

The jury stated: “Due to his outstanding scientific work, the regional and local impact of his research, the lines of ocean-atmosphere research, his ability to interact with diverse researchers both nationally and internationally, and his active participation in several international panels, the 2024 Stimulus Award goes to Dr. Juan A. Rivera”.
